Disodium pamoate is a compound that contains caproic acid. It is used as an analytical reagent for the determination of peptide hormones and pharmacological agents. Disodium pamoate has been shown to be an antimicrobial agent, and can inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to the ribosomal subunits. Disodium pamoate has also been shown to have anticancer properties, which may be due to its ability to induce mitochondrial membrane depolarization in HL-60 cells. This compound binds to nitrogen atoms on biological structures, such as proteins or other organic compounds, thereby altering their structure and function.
