2,6-Dimethylphenylacetic acid is an intermediate in the synthesis of esters and palladium catalysts. It is used as a homogeneous catalyst to convert alcohols to esters. This compound can be prepared by reacting phenylacetaldehyde with methyl iodide followed by reaction with sodium hydroxide. The resulting product is then reacted with aqueous sulfuric acid. 2,6-Dimethylphenylacetic acid has been shown to have good catalytic activity for the conversion of alcohols to esters.
