1,4-Dihydroxynaphthalene is a potent antitumor agent that has been shown to exhibit light-sensitive properties. This compound has been shown to be effective against tumor cells when exposed to light. 1,4-Dihydroxynaphthalene also exhibits antifungal activity in vitro and can be used as an alternative treatment for dermatophytes such as Trichophyton rubrum. This substance is able to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding with DNA and inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. The rate constant for this inhibition was found to be dependent on the coordination geometry of the molecule (d1 vs d2). A higher coordination geometry leads to a higher rate constant and thus more efficient inhibition of bacterial growth.
