Diethyl 2-(2-cyanoethyl)malonate is an organocatalyst that is used in organic synthesis to mediate the formation of β-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones. It is also used as a tethering reagent to facilitate the formation of acrylonitrile, which can then be used for the production of acrylic acid. Diethyl 2-(2-cyanoethyl)malonate has been shown to be effective in the synthesis of medicines such as eflornithine, an anti-tuberculosis drug. This catalyst has a reaction time of 1 hour at room temperature, but can be accelerated by heating or using solvents such as dichloromethane or chloroform.
