Description:Diethyl methylmalonate is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH3COCH2COOC2H5. It is a sodium salt of diethyl methylmalonate, which is a nitrite ion donor. Diethyl methylmalonate has been used to catalyze the palladium-catalyzed coupling of alkanoic acids and methylmalonic acid in the presence of triethylamine. This reaction converts the alkanoic acid into an ester and methylmalonic acid into an alcohol. The reaction mechanism for this process involves a transfer reaction from diethyl methylmalonate to the alkanoic acid followed by nucleophilic substitution at carbon atom 2 of the alkanocarboxylic acid by methyll malonyl chloride (see figure).
The resulting ester undergoes hydrolysis to give picolinic acid and dibromomethane, which is then oxidized with nitrite ion to give
