Diethyl succinate is an ester compound that is used as a methyl donor in the synthesis of other compounds. Diethyl succinate can be prepared by the reaction of ethylmalonic acid with diethyl malonate and hydrogen fluoride. Diethyl succinate has been shown to inhibit the activity of several mammalian methyltransferases, such as those involved in fatty acid biosynthesis. Diethyl succinate also inhibits the activity of erythromycin-sensitive, but not erythromycin-resistant, Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) on macrophages and dendritic cells. This property may be due to its ability to disrupt lipid bilayers and prevent protein binding.
