2,5-Dichloroisonicotinic acid is a molecule that inhibits the function of sodium channels. It is used to treat infectious diseases such as the bacterial infection Q fever and other diseases of the bowel. This drug also blocks transmission of pain signals to the brain by inhibiting the function of voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve cells. The 2,5-Dichloroisonicotinic acid molecule binds with high affinity to all four subunits of NaV1.2, which are alpha, beta, gamma and delta subunits. This prevents activation and inactivation of the channel by voltage changes and blocks transmission of nerve impulses. 2,5-Dichloroisonicotinic acid has been shown to be an effective inhibitor against cycloheximide when used in blood cultures or inflammatory bowel disease models in mice. This drug also inhibits mitochondrial functions and causes death in Xenopus oocytes.
