3,4-Dihydroxybenzophenone is a demethylation agent used in the synthesis of 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid. It has been shown to be cytotoxic and anticancerous in vitro, with a selectivity for cancer cells. 3,4-Dihydroxybenzophenone is also considered to be neuroprotective against oxidative DNA damage and may be useful in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.
