4-(Diethoxyphosphinyl)-2-butenoic acid ethyl ester (EDEP) is a selective inhibitor of the transcription factor human leukocyte antigen-1 (HLA-1). It is a stereoselective and potent inhibitor of HIV-1, with an IC50 of 0.8 μM. EDEP has also been shown to be active against cancer cells, including HLA-A2+ breast cancer cells, HL60 leukemia cells, and human cervical cancer cells. This compound is also an inhibitor of quinolizidine alkaloids biosynthesis in plants. EDEP inhibits the synthesis of quinolizidine alkaloids by binding to the nitrogen nucleophile. EDEP can inhibit the activity of coatings that are made from polymers such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyurethane, or epoxy resins.
