3,3'-Diethylthiacarbocyanine iodide (DTTC) is an organic molecule that has a helical structure and is soluble in organic solvents. It absorbs light in the ultraviolet range and emits light in the visible range. DTTC has been used as a fluorescent probe for the detection of noradrenaline, which is a neurotransmitter found in the central nervous system that plays an important role in regulating heart rate, blood pressure, and appetite. DTTC can also be used to detect bacterial cells by binding to them and emitting fluorescence. The emission wavelength can be modified by changing the orientation of the molecule. This process is called enhancement. DTTC has been shown to have a high viscosity and low dielectric constant, which makes it suitable for use as a ligand for immobilizing enzymes on surfaces of porous materials such as polymers or silica gels.
