Diethyl (trichloromethyl) phosphonate is an ethyl ester that reacts with epidermal growth factor at the phosphite group to produce a phosphonate. Diethyl (trichloromethyl) phosphonate can be prepared by reacting ethyl formate with phosphorus oxychloride in a hydrocarbon solvent. The resulting product is reacted with ethyl alcohol and then hydrolyzed to yield diethyl (trichloromethyl)phosphonate. This compound has shown promising activity as a topical agent for the treatment of epidermal growth and can be used in the preparation of other compounds, such as retinoic acid and chloride.
