Description:Dimethyl (S)-(-)-methylsuccinate is a chiral, asymmetric synthesis catalyst that can be used to produce hydrogenated products. It is an inexpensive, commercially available and easily handled reagent. Dimethyl (S)-(-)-methylsuccinate catalyzes the synthesis of sulfoxides from sulfides and alcohols in the presence of chloride. This reaction is typically carried out at temperatures of about -20°C to room temperature. The product resulting from this reaction is a mixture of two diastereomers with the same molecular weight but different physical properties, due to the stereochemistry of the starting material. Diphosphine ligands are often used for this type of reaction because they are more active than other ligands such as chloride or oxalyl.
