1,8-Dichlorohexadecafluorooctane is a synthetic activated form of hematoporphyrin derivative that binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells and can be used for the treatment of severe anemia. This drug is activated by radiation treatment, which induces the release of metal ions from 1,8-dichlorohexadecafluorooctane to form a complex with hemoglobin. This complex has been shown to have a specific ligand for erythroid cells and may be efficacious in treating anemia. The interaction between 1,8-dichlorohexadecafluorooctane and hemoglobin leads to increased oxygen transport in red blood cells because it increases the surface area available for gas exchange. This drug also has emulsifying properties that allow it to be administered intravenously without clumping or precipitating out of solution. 1,8-Dichlorohexadecaf
