1,3-Di(p-tolyl)thiourea is an analytical reagent that can be used to measure the concentration of isothiocyanates in the air. It is a colorless solid that reacts with carbon disulfide and sulfuric acid to produce a color change. The reaction product is a red compound that absorbs at 540 nm and has a maximum absorbance at 600 nm. 1,3-Di(p-tolyl)thiourea utilizes nucleophilic substitution to react with the thiol group on the sulfhydryl groups of cysteine residues in proteins. The nitrogen atom acts as the nucleophile, attacking the sulfur atom in an electrophilic substitution reaction. This reaction produces a new compound called 1,3-di(p-tolyl)thiourea sulfoxide (1,3DTTOS), which has an absorption maximum of 520 nm.END>
