1,8-Diaminopyrene (1,8-DAP) is an aromatic hydrocarbon that is used in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. It has been shown to be carcinogenic in ovary cells. 1,8-DAP can be detected by a number of analytical methods, including chromatography with activated carbon and gas chromatography with chemical ionization. The mass spectrometric detection of 1,8-DAP is done by quantifying the nitrogen atoms present in the molecule. This compound is found in human feces and has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth in the typhimurium test.
