2,2'-Dihydroxydiphenylmethane (DHPM) is a quaternary ammonium compound that is used in wastewater treatment. It has been shown to be effective at inhibiting the growth of Trichophyton mentagrophytes, an organism that causes athlete's foot. DHPM is also able to bind to metal surfaces and form hydrogen bonds with water molecules, leading to the formation of hydroxyl radicals. These radicals are able to react with chloride ions and halophenols that are present in wastewater, leading to their removal. The hydroxyl radicals also have the ability to penetrate cell membranes and cause neuronal death in hamster V79 cells.
