Diphenylhydramine related compound B (DHB) is a serine protease that has been shown to have acidic properties. It is used as a dietary supplement and drug metabolite, and can be found in the urine of humans who have taken diphenhydramine. DHB's inhibition of the cytochrome P450 enzyme system may lead to synergistic interactions in combination with other drugs, such as normeperidine. The inhibitory effect of DHB on prostaglandin synthesis may lead to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, and diarrhea. Studies have been conducted on the toxicity of DHB in rats and mice. These studies show that DHB might be toxic if consumed at high doses or for extended periods of time.
