2,3-Dimethylbenzonitrile is a nucleophilic solvent that has been shown to be a metabolite of the nitrosamines 4-ethylbenzonitrile and 2-nitropropane. It has been shown to have tumorigenic properties in animal studies. In humans, it has been shown to inhibit the respiratory control center in the brainstem and may also be involved in lung fibrosis.
