Product Information
- 2-(2,4-Dichlorophenyl)-ethanol
- 2,4-Dichlorophenethyl Alcohol
2-(2,4-Dichlorophenyl)ethanol is an organic compound that can be synthesized by reacting 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid with trifluoroacetic acid in the presence of a base. The reaction scheme is:
The reaction proceeds via electrophilic aromatic substitution to give the corresponding 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. The product can then be purified by vacuum distillation or recrystallization. The experiment was carried out with 10 mL of 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid and 3 mL of trifluoroacetic acid in a round bottom flask at room temperature. The reaction was refluxed for 18 hours and then cooled to room temperature before being poured onto crushed ice.
The major product isolated from the experiment was 2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)ethanol (1.0 g). Other products were identified as 2
