Dictamnine is a glycol ether that is used as an analytical reagent in titration calorimetry. It has been shown to have antifungal activity against a range of fungi, including Aspergillus and Candida species, and can also inhibit the growth of oral pathogens. Dictamnine has been shown to induce mitochondrial membrane potential loss in vitro and to cause oxidative injury in tissue culture. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and nitric oxide synthase (NOS). This agent has been shown to have toxic effects on the central nervous system in mice, with neurotoxicity being observed at doses above 500 mg/kg. Dictamnine also has a basic structure that can be oxidized by various pathways, leading to toxicity through oxidative injury.
