Description

5,6-Dihydroxy-7-methoxyflavone is a flavonoid that has potent anticancer effects. It has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of HL60 cells and induce apoptosis in chronic arthritis. The antiproliferative activity of 5,6-dihydroxy-7-methoxyflavone is thought to be due to its ability to interfere with DNA replication by binding to the iron in the active site of hydrogenase. This compound also has antioxidant properties, which may be due to its ability to reduce p-hydroxybenzoic acid and protocatechuic acid radicals. 5,6-Dihydroxy-7-methoxyflavone is found in the plant Oroxylum indicum and in some species of plants from the genus Cichorium.
