Deuteroporphyrin is a derivative of porphyrin. It is used as a diagnostic agent for choroidal neovascularization, which is the formation of new blood vessels in the eye. Deuteroporphyrin 1X dimethyl ester (DPDME) has been shown to inhibit vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A), which is an anti-angiogenic protein that prevents the growth of new blood vessels. DPDME also has nitrite ion and redox potentials, which are necessary for its activity. DPDME can be used as a polymer matrix to produce polymeric nanoparticles, or it can be used as an antimicrobial agent due to its ability to bind with proteins and nucleic acids in bacteria.
