Diethyl 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate is a methyl ketone with an unsymmetrical structure. It is used in the synthesis of fatty acids and optical properties. Diethyl 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate reacts with trifluoroacetic acid and chlorine to form an active methylene. The presence of this active methylene allows for the synthesis of new molecules that are not possible with other reagents. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy has been used to identify the binding constants for diethyl 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate and fatty acids. This molecule can be studied using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, which generates a molecular weight spectrum from 1,000 to 100,000 Da. Diethyl 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate has been shown to react with water molecules to form hydrogen peroxide.
