This reaction is catalyzed by the chloride ion and requires an intramolecular nucleophile such as methyl chloride or hydrochloric acid. The 2,6-dichlorophenethyl alcohol is functionalized by the addition of a chloride group to one of the hydroxyl groups. This functional group can then undergo an intramolecular cyclization with another molecule of 2,6-dichlorophenethyl alcohol in the presence of a chloride salt like silver chloride to produce cyclohexenone.
