Description:

2,3-Dichlorocinnamic acid is an organic compound that can be synthesized in a multistep process involving the reaction of pyridine with sulfuryl chloride. This reaction forms 2,3-dichloropropiophenone and 2,3-dichloroacetophenone. The latter compound is converted to the desired product by reacting it with thionyl chloride. The final step involves hydrolysis of the ester group to form 2,3-dichlorocinnamic acid.
2,3-Dichlorocinnamic acid can also be synthesized from phenylpropiolic acid and chlorosulfuric acid or from methyl propiolate and chlorosulfuric acid.
