- Benzenemethanamine, 2,6-dimethyl-
2,6-Dimethylbenzylamine is a chemical compound that has been shown to have potent antiviral activity. It binds to the active site of the HIV-1 protease enzyme, which blocks the cleavage of polyproteins into functional proteins. In addition, 2,6-dimethylbenzylamine has been shown to be capable of blocking other enzymes such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 integrase and influenza virus neuraminidase. The chemical structure of 2,6-dimethylbenzylamine includes a heterocyclic ring that may be modified to optimise its antiviral activity. This modification can be done by using peptidomimetics or bioactive molecules such as small molecules or lipids.
