This compound can be synthesized from coumarin derivatives and its fluorescence and cellular uptake are due to its flavonoid structure. 3,4-Dimethoxy-2-hydroxyacetophenone has also been shown to increase cisplatin sensitivity in nerve cells and has been used as a fluorescent probe for microscopy and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
