Dhurrin is a natural compound that belongs to the group of phenolic compounds. It is present in the bark of Acacia drepanolobium and in the seeds of A. dhurra. Dhurrin has been shown to have detoxification enzyme activity against cyanide, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, and other toxic substances. It also may have probiotic effects as it has been shown to inhibit growth of infectious bacteria such as Salmonella enteritidis. Dhurrin can be used as an analytical method for studying plant metabolism, and its physiological effects are being investigated by using experimental models or model systems for plants.
