3,6-Dihydroxyphthalonitrile (3,6-DHPN) is an organic compound that has been shown to inhibit the activity of carbonic anhydrase. It may be used in the treatment of colorectal carcinoma and other cancers. 3,6-DHPN is a proton acceptor and reacts with aqueous hydrochloric acid to form the salt 3,6-dihydroxybenzoic acid. The reaction with hydrochloric acid is irreversible and does not affect the optical properties of 3,6-DHPN. This compound is stable under acidic conditions and has shown enzyme inhibition activities against various enzymes such as phosphatases, esterases and proteases. 3,6-DHPN also has calcium chelating properties that are useful in the treatment of osteoporosis.!--
