Deltorphin is a peptide that consists of 11 amino acid residues. It is the product of the pro-opiomelanocortin gene, which is expressed in the pituitary gland and hypothalamus. Deltorphin binds to opioid receptors and has high resistance to drug interactions. It has been shown that deltorphin acts as an agonist for δ-opioid receptor and as an antagonist for κ-opioid receptor. Deltorphin has been shown to have a number of biological properties, including high resistance to preparative HPLC, receptor binding and activity, asymmetric synthesis, intracellular calcium concentration, and synthesis methods. The effect of deltorphin on rat striatal neurons was studied and it was found that this peptide stimulated the trigeminal nerve which led to convulsions in rats. Deltorphin also had no effect on phosphoinositol hydrolysis or tyrosine hydroxyl
