Product Information
Name:1,6-Dihydroxy-naphthalene
Brand:Biosynth
Description:1,6-Dihydroxy-naphthalene is a fluorescent compound that has been used as a cross-linking agent for proteins and as an analytical method for determining the concentration of naphthalene. It has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis by acting as an enzyme inhibitor, preventing the formation of peptide bonds in the ribosome. 1,6-Dihydroxy-naphthalene also has cationic surfactant properties and inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA, inhibiting protein synthesis. The chemical diversity of this molecule is due to intramolecular hydrogen bonding between its two hydroxyl groups. This bond can be broken by amines such as amino acids or ammonia, which are found in proteins.
