It can be prepared by reacting sodium carbonate and malonic acid in the presence of zirconium dichloride. The reaction produces fulvene as an intermediate, which reacts with chloride to form 6,6-diphenylfulvene. This compound can then be used as a bidentate ligand in molecular modeling studies. In addition, it has been found that the bond cleavage of 6,6-diphenylfulvene occurs at an activation energy of 56 kJ/mol.
