Dihydrokawain is a natural drug that has been shown to reduce the concentration of gamma-aminobutyric acid in the brain and inhibit 5-HT synthesis. It has also been shown to have protective effects against ischemic brain damage. Dihydrokawain has also been found to have receptor activity and is metabolized by microbes. The sample preparation for this molecule can be done using analytical methods such as gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) or liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Dihydrokawain can be synthesized asymmetrically by reacting an alpha,beta-unsaturated ketone with an amine in the presence of a chiral catalyst.
