It has been shown to produce significant effects on the magnetic susceptibility of water and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The enzyme responsible for its synthesis is glucose dehydrogenase and it can be found in anaerobic bacteria that use 3-deoxy-3-fluoro--d--glucose as their sole carbon source. This compound also inhibits the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans, which are aerobic bacteria.
