3-Methylhexane is a protonated fatty acid that has been shown to induce inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, and other diseases. 3-Methylhexane is found in wastewater and has been detected in the air of some regions. 3-Methylhexane is a cycloalkane that is converted by chlorine atoms to form chlorinated alkenes, which are known as carcinogens. The chemical reaction between 3-methylhexane and chlorine occurs more quickly at higher temperatures. This conversion can be slowed down by adding hydroxide solutions or using magnetic resonance spectroscopy to monitor the reaction.
