1,2-Epoxycyclopentane is an epoxide that is synthesized by a reaction between sodium salts and chloroperbenzoic acid. The hydrogen bonds in the molecule are asymmetric, and this property is maintained when the epoxide reacts with a fatty acid. This reaction can be used to synthesize cyclopentene and other compounds with similar structures. The kinetics of the reaction have been studied using constant pressure techniques at room temperature for a variety of substrates. In tissue culture, 1,2-epoxycyclopentane has been shown to inhibit DNA synthesis and increase cell death by apoptosis. It also inhibits phospholipid synthesis in cells that lack malonic acid decarboxylase activity.
