3-Ethyl toluene is an aromatic hydrocarbon that is used in the manufacture of rubber, dyes, and pesticides. It has been shown to be a potential carcinogen in chronic exposure studies and has been found to cause mutations in yeast cells. 3-Ethyl toluene is a structural isomer of 3,4-dimethylbenzyl alcohol and can be synthesized by the oxidation of benzene with air or oxygen. The ethyl group on the methyl side chain may undergo oxidation reactions, which could lead to the formation of a number of products including 3-methyl phenol, 1,2-dimethylbenzene, 2-methylphenol, and 4-methylphenol. These oxidation products are toxic to yeast cells and can also cause genetic mutations.
