4-(4-Ethylphenyl)-4-oxobutanoic acid (NSC-97768) is a crystalline compound that has been shown to have neurotoxic effects in mice. The compound inhibits the uptake of glutamate by blocking the NMDA receptor, which may lead to neurotoxicity. 4-(4-Ethylphenyl)-4-oxobutanoic acid has also been shown to interact with receptors on cells in culture, such as the GABA receptor, suggesting that it may have pharmacological effects. Its pharmacokinetic properties are not well understood, but it is thought to be metabolized in the liver by enzymes such as CYP2D6 and CYP3A4.
