4-Ethynyl-1,1'-biphenyl has been shown to be an anti-inflammatory compound. It blocks the production of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inhibiting the activity of cyclooxygenases and lipoxygenases. 4-Ethynyl-1,1'-biphenyl also inhibits the activity of lipases in the intestine, which lowers fat absorption in the body. This drug is insoluble in water and has a low solubility in bile. The major route of excretion is through urine. 4-Ethynyl-1,1'-biphenyl can react with 3-methylcholanthrene to form a variety of reaction products that may have biological activity.
