4-Ethoxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl is a liquid crystal compound that has been shown to form nematic and smectic phases. The chemical structure of this compound includes an ethoxy group, which has been shown to have conformations with dipolar and quadrupolar coupling. The nmr spectrum of 4-Ethoxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl shows peaks at 1.5 ppm for the proton and 3.2 ppm for the deuterium nucleus. This compound has also been reported to show a broadened proton nmr signal due to couplings from the phenyl ring.
