1-Ethyl-4-methylquinoliniumiodide is a reactive compound that is used in the production of optical brighteners. It reacts with cellulose acetate to form a fluorescent product, which emits light when exposed to ultraviolet light. This compound also reacts with fatty acids to produce a fluorescent product, which can be used as an indicator for the presence of vinylene or other alkenes. 1-Ethyl-4-methylquinoliniumiodide has also been shown to react with nitrogen atoms and carbon tetrachloride to form an active methylene group, which is used as a starting point for the synthesis of dihydro derivatives. The optical properties of this compound are dependent on its environment.
