3-Ethyl-3-pentanol is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor that can be found in some plants, such as the fennel plant. It has an activation energy of 29.2 kcal/mol and a molecular weight of 164.26 g/mol. The molecule has two hydroxyl groups, which are found on the terminal carbon atoms. 3-Ethyl-3-pentanol can be oxidized to form 3-ethylhexanal, which is another chemical species with formula C9H18O. It is soluble in water and reacts with chloride to form hydrochloric acid and hydrogen chloride gas. 3-Ethyl-3-pentanol also reacts with peroxide to form ethylbenzene oxide and may react spontaneously with carbon tetrachloride to form ethylbenzene and phosgene gas. 3-Ethyl-3-pentanol has been shown to have x-ray crystal structures at 100 K
