Ethanol-D is a drug that is used to treat inflammatory bowel disease. Ethanol-D is a prodrug that is metabolized by alcohol dehydrogenase to produce acetaldehyde, which in turn reacts with hydrogen peroxide to form the active product, ethanol. Acetaldehyde has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and inhibit gut inflammation in animal models of inflammatory bowel disease. The second-order rate constant for ethanol-D was found to be 1.5x10^(-2) s^(-1). Activation energies for the first step were found to be 55 and 60 kJ/mol for the enolate anion and amide forms, respectively.
