Ethyl isocyanide is a reactive chemical that forms an irreversible covalent bond with the nucleophilic component of a receptor molecule. The inhibition of the receptor binding to its ligand or substrate will result in the inhibition of the biological process that it mediates. In addition, ethyl isocyanide is used to synthesize asymmetric molecules by reacting with an achiral molecule and a chiral catalyst. This reaction mechanism has been shown in the synthesis of glyoxal using ethyl isocyanide and a chiral catalyst. Ethyl isocyanide also has been shown to react with tissue culture cells in vitro, causing cell death by inhibiting protein synthesis through enzyme-mediated reactions.
