(3a,5b,6b,7a)-6-Ethyl-3,7-dihydroxycholan-24-oic acid is a synthetic cholestane derivative that has been shown to be useful in the treatment of biliary cirrhosis. The synthesis of this compound involves the reduction of an ethyl ester using a grignard reagent followed by UV irradiation. The reaction yield is high with a large excess of Grignard reagent used. This compound has been shown to be active against hepatic bile ducts and liver cells in vitro. It also has anti-inflammatory effects and can be used as an alternative treatment for patients who are intolerant to ursodeoxycholic acid or chenodeoxycholic acid.
