2-Ethoxyphenol is a fluorescence probe that is used to measure the inhibition of bacterial growth. It reacts with oxygen atoms in the reaction solution and produces a fluorescent product, which can be detected by measuring the fluorescence intensity. 2-Ethoxyphenol is used as an antimicrobial agent for water treatment, but it has been shown to have limited efficacy against Gram-negative bacteria.
2-Ethoxyphenol inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the enzyme monoethyl ether reductase (MEOR), preventing the formation of a functional MEOR complex and blocking the production of NADPH, which is essential for aerobic respiration. 2-Ethoxyphenol also binds to polymerases in DNA replication, causing degradation and termination of the process.
2-Ethoxyphenol has been shown to inhibit phosphorylation by inhibiting ATP synthesis through synthesis of AMP and ADP.
