Ethyl trans-b-methylcinnamate is a chiral, dimethylsulfoxonium salt that is used as a ligand. The ligand binds to metals and forms a metallacycle. This type of bond cleavage is considered to be reusable and can be used in the immobilization of β-unsaturated ketones for use in epoxidation reactions. Ethyl trans-b-methylcinnamate has been shown to react with ethyl diazoacetate to form an ethyl ester that can undergo phosphine displacement with alkyl halides or acyl chlorides. This reaction mechanism can be used to synthesize trisubstituted ethyl compounds from readily available starting materials.
