N-Ethylaniline is a colorless liquid that has a sweet odor and is soluble in water. N-Ethylaniline is used as a solvent for nitrocellulose, resins, paints, and varnishes. It also functions as an intermediate in the production of pharmaceuticals and dyes. The compound is used to make other chemicals such as ethylenediamine, nitrobenzene, and aniline hydrochloride. N-Ethylaniline has been shown to be genotoxic when exposed to human lymphocytes or DNA from calf thymus. The compound also reacts with oxygen to form nitric oxide radicals that can cause oxidative damage to cells. N-Ethylaniline has been shown to have photochemical properties that allow it to react with ultraviolet light (UV) wavelengths of less than 320 nm.
