Etomoxir is an inhibitor of mitochondrial membrane potential that has been shown to have a number of pharmacological effects. It can be used as a treatment for hepatic steatosis and congestive heart disease, and it also inhibits the growth of malignant brain cells. Etomoxir has been shown to inhibit the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in response to oxidative stress in a model system. Etomoxir also inhibits the synthesis and accumulation of dinucleotide phosphate (NADH), which is necessary for energy metabolism. This drug also has inhibitory properties on locomotor activity in mice and can be used as an immunosuppressant drug for autoimmune diseases.
