Epipregnanolone is a neuroactive steroid that interacts with the GABAA receptor to produce sedative, anxiolytic, and anticonvulsant effects. It is also used in the treatment of premenstrual syndrome in women and as an adjunct therapy for catamenial epilepsy. Epipregnanolone has been shown to bind to benzodiazepine-sensitive GABAA receptors and increase GABAergic neurotransmission. This drug has been shown to have a number of physiological effects on the brain, including decreased anxiety and increased sleepiness. Epipregnanolone has also been shown to be a potent inhibitor of hydrogen bonds between bases in DNA polymerase chain reactions, leading to enzymatic activity changes.
